Thursday Thoughts: Vol 3 | Is 8

Pastor Steve shares these links to stimulate some Thursday Thoughts…

Selfishness – Respectable Sins Part 6 … Continuing the series from Evangelical Magazine focusing on what Jerry Bridges called ‘respectable sins’ – this is part 6. Andrew Norbury writes: “We have fallen for a lie that says the way to life, fulfillment and joy is to look after yourself, seek your own welfare, do whatever it takes to protect your own comfort, use all your time and money on yourself. This is not a new lie, we can trace it all the way back to Eden. Satan convinced Adam and Eve to be more concerned about their own pleasure and increased wisdom than trusting and following God. In 2 Corinthians 5:15 Paul defines sin as ‘living for ourselves’. We are all guilty.” You can read the rest HERE.

Chosen – The Doctrine of Election Kills Pride … Josh Buice writes: “If you know the doctrine of election, you will not walk around with a swagger. Instead, you will be humble. It will cause you to boast in the cross of Jesus—not the flesh of mankind.” You can read the rest HERE.

The Missing Word in Our Modern Gospel … Kevin DeYoung writes: “I don’t doubt that many of us feel beat up and put down. We struggle with shame and self-loathing. We need to know we can be okay, even when we don’t feel okay. It is good news to hear, then, that God loves us in Christ and that we are precious in his sight. But the gospel is more than positive self-talk, and the gospel Jesus and the apostles preached was more than a warm, “don’t let anybody tell you you’re not special” bear hug. There’s a word missing from the presentation of our modern gospel. It’s the word repent.” You can read the rest HERE.
