Moses took dramatic action in response to Israel’s sin. He shattered the Tablets of the Law. He turned the golden calf into dust and made them drink it. He confronted Aaron directly for his failure of leadership. Then, he had the Levites kill 3,000 men. Surely this entire incident is now over. But it is not. Sin cannot be atoned for by human action.
